A Week in the Life of Chennai

Our featured event for the week is  A Week in the Life of Chennai, a photographic event. Sponsored by the Goethe Institut (Max Mueller Bhavan) and Art Chennai 2012, in association with Travelling Lens,  ‘A Week in the Life of Chennai’  is Chennai’s first mass-based, public photography project.  Under this project, amateur and professional photographers alike are invited to take photos of Chennai during the week of February 19-26, and submit them for large-scale display in public spaces around the city beginning on March 13, to coincide with the Art Chennai 2012 festival, March 11-18.

Photographers will create images in one or more of 16 themes, including Life of the Night; Commuting/Transportation; Hidden Chennai; Dichotomy; Community; Religious Chennai; Markets; the Beach; Food; Portrait/Self-Portrait/Body and Form; Cityscape/Landscape; Heritage; Art and Culture; Industry; Walls of Chennai; and Conceptual, which includes abstract and other digital art.  (Descriptions of each of these themes can be found on our website) Photographers may capture their images digitally or on film; we will accept images taken with SLRs, point-and-shoot cameras, and even cell phones.

The submission deadline is February 27, after which time a team of photographers led by Yannick Cormier will select up to 200 images for public display during Art Chennai 2012.  Unlike most photography competitions, there is no cost to participate; the project will pay for printing the images (on flex/vinyl) and hanging them in public spaces around central Chennai.

In conjunction with the project, Travelling Lens will lead two workshops on Composition on February 21 and 22 at the Goethe Institut, during which Yannick Cormier will provide guidance on how to best create images for this competition.  After these sessions, the Travelling Lens team will be available to provide critical review of participants’ images on a first-come, first-served basis.

To participate in the competition and workshops, photographers can register here . For more information on the event, you can touch base with the Art Chennai team at artchennai2012@travellinglens.net.
